Whether you’re looking to produce wireframes in Balsamiq, Axure or one of the other wireframing tools available, you should firstly ask yourself some key questions. I often get asked, which do I prefer? or which of the two would I recommend? for me, this is not a straight forward answer, it’s a matter of context. For me, the two best players on the market are the old stalwarts Balsamiq and Axure. With the plethora of tools available to UX’ers these days selecting the correct wireframing tool for a project isn’t as easy as it once was. This post was mentioned on Twitter by jridley and uxroom, Torlone Gianfranco. There are lots of wireframing tools available in the market place at the moment from web based applications such as Balsamiq and Hotgloo, to desktop applications such as Axure (Mac and Windows) and Omnigraffle (Mac Only) not to mention more traditional tools such as Adobe Photoshop (yes you can wireframe in photoshop, but I wouldn’t personally recommend it). Tweets that mention Use Balsamiq Mockups to Protocast - Said,.The finished product is on PayPal X.com, although you have to login to PayPal to try the reference applications. This protocast was created for the developers who were coding the simulation. The storyboard helped us nail down the two primary workflows we wanted to design for. But now I can do the same thing quicker with Balsamiq! Storyboard I used to do this in OmniGraffle- see example below for a reference application we designed for PayPal X. Thanks to Todd Warfel for describing this technique in his new book Prototyping: A Practitioners Guide to Prototyping, Rosenfeld Media. If the audience is developers I walk through the application and discuss the flow and features, if the audience is the client or their end users, I stick to the story in the storyboard.

My protocasts are different depending on the audience. Link them together and then create a screencast of the happy path, narrating while clicking through the screens. What I like to do is create a storyboard for each of the major workflows, then wireframe the screens. A protocast is a prototype delivered as a screencast.
